New Delhi, Sep 10 : Congress chief Rahul Gandhi kickstarted the party’s call for a nationwide shutdown from Rajghat in New Delhi on Monday against the steep rise in diesel and petrol prices and the falling value of the rupee against the dollar. Violence is being reported from Pune and Mumbai from Maharashtra, Bihar (where trains were stopped),Gujarat and several other states .While other Opposition parties like DMK, NCP, RJD, JD(S), have extended their support, the Congress has also asked civil society groups and NGOs to join the nationwide protest.

Jan Adhikar Party Loktantrik workers blocked railway tracks in Patna’s Rajendra Nagar Terminal railway station in support to Bharat Bandh that has been called by Congress and other opposition parties today over fuel price hike. While Protesters in Gujarat’s Bharuch burnt tyres and stop buses and the traffic was halted.

Congress has claimed that 21 parties, including SP, BSP, TMC, DMK and RJD, as well as several chambers of commerce and traders’ bodies, have backed its Bharat bandh call. Moreover, five Left Front parties have given a separate call for bandh over the hike in fuel prices, the problem of farmers and unemployment issues.

Congress leader Ajay Maken said the party wants petrol and diesel to be brought under the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which would decrease the price by Rs 15-18.He said there should be an immediate reduction in central excise duty and excessive VAT in the states.About 20 political parties are participating in the protest, Maken told the media.

He said the Centre had earned Rs 11 lakh crore in the last four years through excise duty on fuel and this money was taken from the common man to fill the government’s coffers.

The bandh will be observed across the country on September 10, between 9 am and 3 pm. Congress communication department head Randeep Surjewala said the timing of the bandh is such that “the common person is not inconvenienced”.
