Lucknow, Jan 8 : Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan has demanded five per cent quota for Muslims and warned that Muslims, which constitute the second largest population in India can come to the streets to get their demands met.
Khan said the government should allocate 5 per cent quota for Muslims from the new 10 per cent reservation announced for the economically backward in General category.
Referring to the Sachar Commission report, Khan said “the report says the Muslims’ condition is even worse than Dalits. The manner people came out on the streets in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh to get their demands met, similarly the second largest population in India of Muslims could also come on the streets.”
The NDA government has introduced a Constitutional Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha to make the quota for General category a reality. Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution need to be amended to bring in a clause for reservation for economically weaker sections in educational institutions and government jobs.
