Atiq Ahmed- from savior to survivor in SP

Google him out and you will get to know what the don turned politician Atiq ahmed has achieved in past two decades, his story is full of risks, swings and surprises when it comes to politics.

A glimpse of his past-

He was born on 10th August 1962 at Shrawasti district. He was never a meritorious student and he left studies after he failed in High School examinations. He started glazing as a criminal at a very tender age and he was booked for charges of murder in 1979 in the age of 17. That was the beginning of his career as a dreaded gangster who gradually became a synonym of terror in and around Allahabad.

His gang started making money from government contracts, mining projects and extortion along with land grabbing. In 1992 Allahabad police issued his history sheet which claimed that he was involved in cases of murder, kidnapping and extortion in districts of Lucknow, Kaushambi, Allahabad, Chitrakoot and Bihar. Maximum number of cases was registered at Allahabad and in the time period from 1986 to 2007 he was charged with over a dozen cases of gangster act.
He was also declared as an absconder in 2007 when Mayawati came to power. Atiq holds the record for being the first one to be booked under UP’s Gangster Act. He still remains as a history-sheeter with Allahabad police and he is registered as “inter-state gang number 227” in police records. Recently more than 150 criminal cases are pending against him.

First step to politics-

Atiq realized that politics can be his real master key to expand his horizons and contested as independent candidate in 1989 from Allahabad west seat and succeeded in getting victory. He was re-elected in 1991 and 1993 as independent candidate and in 1996 he contested again from the same seat via SP and was selected again.

Atiq first hit headlines in 1995, when he led the attack on BSP supremo Mayawati and her MLAs at the state guest house after she withdrew support from the SP. His name also figured in the dreaded murder of Mohammed Ghulam in 1997.
Although he changed his camp in three years and joined Apna Dal in 1999 which was headed by Dr Sonelal Patel. Ateeq lost elections in 1999 from Pratapgarh but in 2002 he was elected as MLA from Apna Dal. But he was compelled to rejoin SP in 2003 as Mulayam Singh was in power, he declared Atiq as Lok sabha candidate from Phoolpur constituency and he managed to get elected from the same seat in 2004.

He contested the 2009 polls from Pratapgarh on Apna Dal ticket and stood 5th. In 2012 assembly polls, he was Apna Dal candidate from Allahabad West but lost to Puja Pal of BSP by 8,000 votes. He contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections on SP ticket from Shrawasti.
