Arunchal Pradesh verdict: Those who trampled on democratic norms have been defeated, says Sonia

Welcoming the Supreme Court verdict restoring the Congress government in Arunachal Pradesh, on Wednesday,Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday hit out at the Central government saying those who had trampled upon democratic norms have been defeated and . hoped the ruling would deter the central government from further misusing its power.

The Congress president hoped that the judgment would establish the democratic values enshrined in our Constitution.
Sonia Gandhi took to twitter and said, “Those who have trampled upon constitutional propriety and democratic norms have been defeated.”
A five-judge Constitution Bench, in an unanimous and unprecedented verdict, quashed all the decisions of the Governor that had led to imposition of the President’s Rule in the state, calling his actions as “illegal” and violative of the Constitutional provisions.

“The verdict will deter the Union government from any further misuse of power. Those who had trampled upon constitutional propriety and democratic norms have been defeated,” she said.

 

Congratulating the people of the northeastern state, Sonia said the Congress would continue its fight to strengthen democracy and safeguard federal structure of the country.

Her comments followed the apex court’s judgement restoring the ousted Nabam Tuki government as it quashed the decision of Governor Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa to advance the assembly session in December 2015.
