Srinagar, May 10: The bullet-riddled body of an Army officer was found in Shopian in Jammu and Kashmir this morning. Police said he was kidnapped by terrorists late last night in the town of Kulgam in Kashmir when he went to attend a family function.

The body was identified to be of an Army Lieutenant Umar Fayaz.

Lt Umar, born on June 8, 1994, was posted with 2 Rajputana Rifles in Akhnoor and was martyred by terrorists in Shopian last night. Fayaz, an ex-National Defence Academy (NDA) cadet, was scheduled to go for a ‘Young Officers Course’ in September.  At NDA, he was part of the hockey team. The officer’s father is a farmer and has a small-time apple business.

The murder of Kashmiri army officer Ummer Fayaz by suspected militants is a “watershed moment” in the Valley and local residents will turn the tide against “terrorism”, a senior army official said on Wednesday

“The Army salutes the braveheart and stands by the bereaved family in this hour of tragedy,” the official said, adding, “we are committed to bring the perpetrators of this heinous act of terror to justice”.

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday termed the abduction and killing of an Army officer posted in Jammu-Kashmir as “a dastardly act of cowardice”. In a series of tweets, Jaitley posted on Twitter: “Abduction & murder of Lt. Ummer Fayaz by terrorists in Shopian is a dastardly act of cowardice. This young officer from J&K was a role model.”

“We share the grief of family of Lt. Ummer Faiyaz and stand in solidarity. Lt. Ummer Faiyaz will continue to inspire youth in the Valley,” the Minister added.
