San Francisco, Aug 6: Apple aficionados waiting for the next flagship device might be in for a treat as the Cupertino-based technology giant is expected to launch a refresh of iPhone 7 models along with iPhone 8 in the coming months.

Photos of a couple of iPhone dummy models were leaked online which show Apple devices with a glass backing, meaning the models shown in the pictures could have wireless charging as a feature, according to a report in The Verge.

The reports about iPhone 8 have been making rounds in the media for quite some time but information regarding iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus have cropped up as recently as last month, suggesting that Apple might announce three iPhone models next month.

However, contrary reports have also surfaced with Business Insider saying the new iPhone might not be out until as early as 2018, and GSM Arena reporting that the iPhone 8 has gone into mass production.

So far, we have to rely on the leaks and rumours. Come September, the situation will hopefully be cleared once and for all.

New Delhi, Jan 24: Twitter on Wednesday launched a special #RepublicDay emoji ahead of Republic Day celebrations in the country.

Available in nine languages, the emoji that represents “India Gate” will be live until Monday, January 29.

“Twitter is delighted to join the celebration with a customised emoji of the India Gate. This national symbol in the emoji serves as a reminder of unity as the country joins in the public conversation on this day,” said Mahima Kaul, Head of Public Policy and Government, at Twitter India.

The “India Gate” emoji design holds a special significance as the Prime Minister visits the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate every year to pay tribute to the martyrs before the annual Republic Day parade begins.

“#RepublicDay Parade will showcase might of the Indian armed forces and indigenously developed defence equipment along with the country’s cultural heritage,” Defence Minister’s official Twitter handle @DefenceMinIndia tweeted, using the new Twitter R-Day emoji.

Twitteratis across the world can use the #RepublicDay, #HappyRepublicDay and #RepublicDay2018 hashtags to use the new emoji while composing tweets.

New Delhi, Jan 24: Facebook has acquired a biometric ID verification startup named Confirm that specialises in remotely verifying IDs like drivers licenses.

The startup offers an application programming interface (API) that helps verify government-issued identification cards.

“We’re excited to announce that we have agreed to be acquired by Facebook! This is the culmination of three years of hard work building technology that will keep people safe and secure online,” Confirm said in a statement on Wednesday.

The acquisition, for which financial details were not disclosed, is part of Facebooka’s effort to minimise the presence of fake profiles on its platform.

“We are excited to welcome the Confirm team to Facebook. Their technology and expertise will support our ongoing efforts to keep our community safe,” Facebook told TechCrunch.

“We’re ready to take the next step on our journey with Facebook. However, in the meantime this means all of our current digital ID authentication software offerings will be wound down,” Confirm said.

In India, Facebook has run a small test with users to enter their names as per their Aadhaar, to help them sign up to the social network with their real names and connect with friends and family.

“The test, which has now finished, merely includes additional language on the account sign-up page to explain that using their Aadhaar name will help family and friends recognise them,” Facebook said in a statement.

“We are not collecting Aadhaar data and do not require people to enter their Aadhaar name when they sign up to Facebook,” the company stressed.

Facebook has over 217 million monthly active users in India and 212 million of them are active on smartphones.

It has 2.1 billion monthly active users globally.
