New Delhi, May 23: In the wake of the anti-Sterlite protests which took place on Tuesday in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi, Congress President Rahul Gandhi said that the agitators were killed for refusing Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) ideologies.

“Tamilians have been massacred because they refused to accept Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS’s) ideologies. The RSS and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been opposed by Tamil Nadu. Also, people of Tamil Nadu cannot be suppressed,” Gandhi tweeted in Tamil.

The Congress Chief also extended support to the people of Tamil Nadu. “Dear Tamil brothers and sisters, we are with you,” he added.

Earlier on Tuesday, Gandhi stated “The gunning down by the police of 9 people in the Sterlite Protest in Tamil Nadu, is a brutal example of state-sponsored terrorism. These citizens were murdered for protesting against injustice. My thoughts & prayers are with the families of these martyrs and the injured.

At least 11 people lost their lives and more than 65 injured during the protest against the construction of a new copper smelter by the Sterlite industries in Thoothukudi.

The agitation turned violent after protestors were stopped to march up to the copper plant, due to which they began to pelt stones and topple police vehicles.

In retaliation, police officials resorted to lathi-charge and tear gas to control the situation.

The agitation against the plant, which represents the copper unit of Vedanta Limited, recently escalated after the firm announced the expansion of its unit in the city.

Sterlite Copper, which presently operates a 400,000-tonne per annum, maintains it has received necessary permits and has not violated any guidelines.
