Andhra Pradesh: Now, safer train rides for women with ‘Subhadra Vahini’

Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), June 12: In a unique initiative to give a boost to women security, the Visakhapatnam railway station of Waltair Division, East Coast Railway, has launched an all-female group of railway personnel, named Subhadra Vahini, who will assist lady passengers subjected to inconveniences, such as teasing, as they travel in trains passing through the railway station.

Divisional Railway Manager MS Mathur launched the programme, on Monday.

Subhadra Vahini is a group of 32 railway personnel comprising 16 from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and an equal number from the commercial wing of the division.

To get in touch with Subhadra Vahini, women can dial on the toll-free number 182.

The initiative is a joint effort of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Commercial Department Waltair Division.

Launching the programme, Divisional Railway Manager MS Mathur said that the initiative has been started to help women passengers, who may be facing trouble as they travel in trains.

Mathur added that the members of the special team were meant for security-related needs of women passengers. The idea of having women providing security to female passengers is to help travellers approach them without any hesitation.

“Harassed women passengers can seek assistance from the special team by calling the toll free no 182. The women security personnel of the RPF and the ticket checking staff will be monitoring the activities of miscreant to better attend to the grievances of the female passengers,” an official of the railways told The New Indian Express.

On a similar note, Union Railways Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday told news agency ANI that the safety of passengers is of utmost importance for the Railway Ministry.

“The mindset of people has changed towards the Railways during the tenure of the present government. Today, the Indian Railways is focusing on passenger safety and is putting its best foot forward to see how we can upgrade infrastructure to improvise and address the areas which affect the consumer directly,” Goyal said.
