Srinagar, Aug 29: Two Hizb-ul-Mujahideen terrorists were gunned down in an encounter in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.
The militants have been identified as Altaf Ahmad Dar alias Altaf Kachroo (top HM commander) and Umar Rashid Wani.
Kachroo belonging to Redwani village of Kulgam district carried a bounty of Rs 15 lakh on his head. His killing is being dubbed as a major success in the anti-militancy operations in the Kashmir valley.
The police have registered a case and investigation underway.
A large cache of arms and ammunition were also recovered from the militants.
The gunfight broke out after the security forces cordon off the Binpora village following information about the presence of the militants there.
“As the joint forces of the Rashtriya Rifles (RR), special operations group (SOG) of state police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) approached the house, the holed up militants fired upon them triggering the encounter,” a police officer told media.
“Firing exchanges have now stopped. The bodies of the slain militants and their weapons have been recovered,” the officer added.
As a preventive measure, mobile internet services have been suspended in Anantnag and Kulgam.
