Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has described the victory of SP-BSP alliance in Phulpur and Gorakhpur bypolls as Saudebaazi” and conceded that the results were unexpected therefore BJP would devise strategies to defeat the Opposition.
Another pertinent aspect should be observed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah didn’t campaign in Gorakhpur and Phulpur despite the national spotlight on the two by-elections,indicates they were keen on sending an unambiguous message to Yogi that he has to obey the orders of RSS and come under their thumb, but five-time lawmaker from Gorakhpur, Yogi Adityanath has been keen on ruling the state by his own style.
Yogi has attributed the loss to overconfidence among the party workers. Up till now, Amit Shah and BJP has been seen indulging in “Saudabaazi” to come to power in states where they were in minority or a hung verdict was given by the people.
Modi has been changing his Jumlas with time and convineance but people are desparately waiting for ache din.
The results have also revealed that Micro-caste calculations are back in the Hindi heartland due to the faulty policies of the Yogi government and Modi government that deepened faultlines and sparked caste and religious resentments.
The Gorakhpur parliamentary constituency was once a stronghold of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
while Phulpur, once represented by the country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, was won by Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya in 2014.
BJP has lost all 10 Lok Sabha by elections in 2017-18 in Amritsar, Arinagar, Malappurram and Gurdaspur in 2017 and in 2018 in Ajmer, Alwar, Uluberia, Gorakhpur, Phulpur and Araria.
BJP is likely to cite “sameekaran (caste equations)” and “vote transfer”for the Samajwadi Party candidate, supported by Bahujan Samaj Party -Backward-Dalit-Muslim (B-D-M) as Gorakhpur is dominated by backwards votes.
The Nishads have not been part of the power-sharing game plan with the spoils of power only going to certain castes. SP decided to field a backward Nishad to give representation to such marginalised voices,” said Akhilesh Yadav.
It appears that the Saffron party which has been caught unawares of Opposition arithmetic will now adopt the caste arithmetic to select their candidates.
It is high time that Modi government at the centre and the Yogi government in the state must deliver on substantive promises including jobs and immediately stop devising strategies for capturing the power. Modi, who claims to be a nationalist should not focus on winning the elections rather he should focus on taking the country forward.
The Opposition parties including the regional parties should be cautious enough as BJP will try to create differences between the alliance through candidates of Samajwadi Party and BSP. Akhilesh and Mayawati has to keep the alliance intact by keeping all the caste under their umbrella, Upper Castes, Jats, Dalits, OBCs and Muslims.
