7 killed, over 8,000 flee homes as quakes, landslides hit Indonesia

Jakarta, Nov 17: Seven people were killed and more than 8,000 others fled their homes as landslides and quakes struck Indonesia’s West Sulawesi province, officials said on Saturday.

The victims died during the evacuation, Pasamboan Pangloli, head of rehabilitation and reconstruction unit of the disaster management agency in the district, told Xinhua news agency.

The landslides also buried at least 8 houses in the district, the official said.

More than 8,000 people fled their homes and were taking shelters as several moderate quakes with magnitudes from 5.1 to 5.5 struck the district in the past few days, said Pangloli.

West Sulawesi province borders Central Sulawesi province which was devastated by a series of powerful quakes and an ensuing tsunami by the end of September that left over 2,000 people dead.

5.1 magnitude Earthquake hits Bay of Bengal, tremors felt in Chennai

New Delhi, Feb 12: An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 on the Richter Scale hit the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday morning. The quake struck the region at 7:02 am.

Light tremors were also felt in Chennai where people took to social media to report the quake.

However, no casualty or any damage to property was reported.

New Delhi, February 2: An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale hit the Hindukush region on Saturday. Tremors were also felt in Delhi-NCR region and neighbouring states including Punjab.

Meanwhile, India’s neighbouring nations Afghanistan and Pakistan also felt the tremors on Saturday afternoon. No casualties or damage to property has been reported. More details awaited. The massive quake hit the Hindukush region a day after Palghar district in Maharashtra was hit by five consecutive quakes in 24 hours.

6.2-magnitude quake jolts Indonesia

Jakarta, Jan 22: An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale rocked East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia on Tuesday, but was not potential for tsunami, the country’s meteorology and geophysics agency said.

There was no initial report of damage, the agency said.

The quake had epicentre at 103 km southwest of Sumba Barat district of the province and a depth of 10 km under sea bed, official in charge of meteorology and geophysics agency Aziz Sugiarso said.

“For this quake, there were no signs of tsunami to occur so that we did not issue a warning for that,” he told Xinhua.

“We have not got any damages or casualty triggered by the quake,” he said.

Nine minutes after the quake, an aftershock of 5.2-magnitude struck off the province, the official said.

Indonesia is prone to quake as it lies on a vulnerable quake-impacted zone so called “the Pacific Ring of Fire”.
