Siachen, Nov 19: Six persons, including four soldiers and two civilian porters, were killed in an avalanche in the Siachen Glacier on Monday.
As per the Army, eight personnel operating in Norther Sector of Siachen Glacier at an altitude of 19,000 feet were hit by an avalanche at 3:30 pm today. The deceased were rescued from the avalanche debris but succumbed to extreme hypothermia, confirmed the Indian Army.
Avalanche Rescue Teams were deployed in the avalanche-hit region to rescue the individuals who were stuck under the snow. After hours of rescue operations, all eight personnel were pulled out of the avalanche debris.
Seven individuals, who were critically injured, accompanied by medical teams were evacuated by helicopters to the nearest Military Hospital.
At the hospital, a total of six persons including four soldiers and two porters succumbed to extreme hypothermia after they were stuck under the snow for long hours.
