6.6-magnitude quake hits Indonesia’s Sulawesi

A shallow earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.6 hit Sulawesi, Indonesia at 14:35 UTC (21:35 local time) on May 29, 2017. The agency is reporting a depth of 9.6 km (5.9 miles). Indonesia’s BMKG is reporting M6.6 at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).

According to the USGS, the epicenter was located 26.3 km (16.3 miles) NW of Kasiguncu (population 0), 33.8 km (21 miles) WNW of Poso (population 47 110), and 79.2 km (49.2 miles) ESE of Palu (population 282 431), Indonesia.

There are 1 180 648 people living within 100 km (62 miles). 1 100 of them are living within 2 km (1.2 miles).

Some 29 000 people are estimated to have felt very strong shaking.

Guatemala City, July 17:  The death toll from the eruption of Guatemala’s Fuego volcano on June 3 has risen to 116, authorities said.

Three new victims identified by the Guatemalan National Institute of Forensic Sciences are on the list of the missing, and hence the total toll stands at 116 deaths and 302 missing, reports Efe news.

The forensic institute still has to investigate more than 200 cases to determine if they correspond to the missing.

The Fuego volcano saw one of the strongest eruptions in history, causing significant material damage and affecting almost 2 million people.

Nine killed as landslide hits Manipur’s Tamenglong

Tamenglong, July 11: At least nine persons lost their lives on Wednesday after a landslide hit Tamenglong district of  Manipur. 

Several houses were also collapsed in the district at the wee hours.

According to India Meteorological Department and MeT heavy to very heavy rainfall likely to occur across Manipur in the coming days.

Since the beginning of monsoon season, several incidents of landslides triggered by rains have been reported across the country.

The Chamba-Rishikesh National Highway blocked due to a landslide on Wednesday.

On July 8, incessant rains had caused landslides along the stretch of National Highway(NH)-2, affecting traffic along the Kohima-Dimapur road.

Strong earthquake jolts Japan, no tsunami warning
