6.2 Magnitude earthquake jolts 281km ESE of Kamaishi, Japan

A huge earthquake off the coast of Japan has woken the country in the middle of the night.

The 6.2-magnitude tremor is believed to have struck the region of Sanriku, which lies on the northeastern side of the island of Honshu.

Its centre sits 200 miles east of Fukushima nuclear plant, prompting fears for the permanantly closed facility.

The earthquake has struck less than 24 hours after a horror mega-quake rocked Mexico City and left hundreds dead.
