52-year-old woman found murdered at her home in Laxmi Nagar

Delhi, July 14: A 52-year-old woman was found murdered at her residence at Lalita Park area of Laxmi Nagar in east Delhi on Thursday night. The deceased was identified as Sangeeta Bansal who was working at a PG.

The incident came to light at 9:30 pm when Sangeeta’s in-laws reached their home and noticed the doors of her flat bolted from outside. They opened the door and saw the lady was lying in a pool of blood. Her body had stab wounds on neck and torso.

“Sangeeta was a widow. Her husband passed away two years back. Since then she was living in her flat on the first floor of a two storied building at Lalita Park. Her brother-in-law was first to spot her body.

He informed the police and then informed us about the incident,” expressed Subhash Gupta, brother of the deceased.Laxmi NagarSangeeta is survived by her two married daughters. Sangeeta’s in-laws were staying at the ground floor, which has a separate entry.

“It seems like people known to the deceased are involved. There are no signs of forcible entry. Also, two glasses of water were lying on the table which indicates an involvement of two or more people,” said a police official.

“We have accessed the footage of CCTV cameras installed at nearby shops to identify the accused. The case is being investigated from each aspect. The assailants will be arrested soon,” the official added.

A case of murder was registered and the body was sent for post-mortem, reports of which are still awaited.

Lucknow, Dec 16 : Celebrations broke out in the Uttar Pradesh capital and Amethi on Saturday as soon as Rahul Gandhi took over as the new president of the Congress.

Jubilant party workers danced to the thumping of dhols and burst firecrackers as news of the coronation of their “Rahul Bhaiyya” was telecast on television channels.

The centre of the celebrations in the state capital was the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) office at Mall Avenue where a large number of old timers, party loyalists, supporters and workers along with state office bearers had gathered since morning in anticipation of the Gandhi scion taking over the party reins.

Over 100 kg of sweets was also distributed. Legislator Aradhana Mishra, who took part in the celebrations, said this was a momentous occasion for the party as a young leader was now in charge of the party fortunes.

“Youth are the backbone of the country and it is a heartening moment for all of us that the power has now shifted to a young leader,” she said.

Several hoardings have come up in Amethi, the parliamentary constituency of Rahul Gandhi, congratulating him on his elevation as the Congress boss. Party workers also took out small motorcycle rallies with Congress flags to mark the occasion.

Builder’s killer held after shootout in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, Dec 16: A criminal who had shot dead a builder was arrested in Ghaziabad after a shootout in which he and a policemen were injured, police said on Saturday.

A .32 bore pistol and two cartridges were seized from Mohammad Saif, Superintendent of Police (City) Akash Tomar said.

Following a tip-off about the contract killer’s presence in Ghaziabad, police said it increased patrolling in the area on Friday night. Police came across the criminal riding a motorcycle with another person, and asked him to surrender. However, he fired at the police and tried to flee.

In the subsequent firing, the Constable sustained a gunshot injury and Saif shot in the leg. While he was overpowered by police, his accomplice fled the spot.

Both the injured were taken to a nearby hospital where both were declared out of danger.

The SP said that during initial questioning, the criminal confessed to the contract killing of Ghaziabad-based builder S.P. Singh in his office on November 9.

Icy winds blow in Lucknow, mercury dips

Lucknow, Dec 16: Icy winds were blowing across the Uttar Pradesh capital and neighbouring areas on Saturday, bringing down the mercury.

As the sun shone brightly, the weatherman said the biting winter has arrived. Winds were blowing at speeds of 30 kmph. There was likely to be fog till Monday.

Director of the Regional Met Office J.P. Gupta said temperatures were likely to fall further in the coming days.

The minimum temperature recorded in the state capital here in the last 24 hours was 16 degrees Celsius while the maximum was 23.6 degrees celsius.

Gorakhpur was colder with minimum temperatures recorded at 13 degrees Celsius, Varanasi recorded a minimum temperature of 19 while Allahabad 17 and Kushinagar was cold at 14 degrees Celsius.
