That’s it! Australia win by 25 runs. India all out for 323. India snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Rahane was dismissed for two after walking in to bat at number seven in India’s tense 349-run chase against Australia.
Ajinkya Rahane, who injured himself during Australia’s innings in the fourth ODI at the Manuka Oval in Canberra needed four stitches on his right hand.
India were set 349 against Australia in the penultimate game of the five-match series. Rahane, who has scored two fifties in the series so far, came out to bat with India in trouble at 286/5 in the 41st over after Gurkeerat Singh Mann perished to off-spinner Nathan Lyon.
Rahane looked uncomfortable when he joined Ravindra Jadeja in the middle but there was the last recognized pair for the tourists. However, the Mumbai batsman lasted only three balls, falling to Kane Richardson.
After electing to bat, Australia were well served by openers Aaron Finch (107) and David Warner (93). Cameos from Steve Smith (51) and Glenn Maxwell (41) helped the hosts edge close to 350 despite some good bowling from Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav in the closing stages.
India have already lost the series and are playing for pride. The bowlers have been under fire for failing to defend successive 300-plus scores and a target of 296 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday.
Rahane’s injury is a major blow to the Indian team, which has only five specialist batsmen for this series.
