36 acquitted, 24 convicted in Gulberg society massacre


After 14 long years, a special SIT court in Ahmedabad here on Thursday convicted 24 people and pronounced 36 others as innocent in the 2002 post-Godhra riots in Gulberg Society.

The terrible riots that broke out in Gulberg society left 69 people dead including the former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri.



After the decision came, Ehsan Jafri’s widow Zakia said that she is upset with the verdict and will appeal against it in higher courts and its sad that 36 have been let off.

“Complete justice has not been done; I will continue to fight, we will appeal against the verdict in higher courts,” Zakia added.

The quantum of sentence for those convicted in the case will be delivered on June 6.
