60 Children, Including Newborns Die In 5 Days at Gorakhpur’s BRD Hospital

Uttar Pradesh, August 12: At least thirty children, including a number of newborns, have died in the last 48 hours at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district and 60 in the last five days.

The oxygen supply at the BRD Hospital, the largest hospital in the Gorakhpur region, was allegedly stopped as the suppliers’ bill of Rs 67 lakh was not cleared.

The BJP ruling government has ordered an investigation into the tragedy but denied reports linking them to a disruption in the supply of oxygen at the hospital.

Seven children passed away at the state-run Baba Raghav Das Medical College in the last one day. The maximum, 23 died on August 10, the same day that the firm which supplies oxygen to the hospital stopped doing so as previous bills had not been paid.

But according to the ANI reports,  Department handling oxygen supply wrote to authorities on 3 and 10 August inform from of shortage as Pushpa Sales stopped supply over pending paymn.

But the Yogi Adityanath government is unable to digest the fact and has in multiple statements claimed they are not linked, as the hospital had access to oxygen from other places.

Late Yesterday, nearly 300 oxygen cylinders arrived from Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) Faizabad at the hospital.’

Gorakhpur is UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s constituency. The chief minister visited the hospital two days back.
