22 killed after stampede at Mumbai’s railway station foot over bridge

Maharashtra, Sep 29, 2017: At least twenty-two people killed and more than 20 injured on Friday morning after stampede at Elphinstone railway station’s foot over bridge in Mumbai.

Maharashtran minister, Vinod Tawde announced compensation of 5 Lakhs each will be given to kin of those dead. State government will bear medical expenses of injured.

The victims were taken to the nearby KEM Hospital in Parel. Top police and railway officials have rushed to the spot.

The incident took place around 10:46 am along the narrow foot over bridge leading to the exit of the station on the western railway of the Mumbai local train services.

The cause of the stampede on the narrow footover bridge was not known, but eyewitnesses claimed that a sudden rumour of a suspected electrical short-circuit sparked off a panic.

As the rescue teams arrived, local cab drivers and workers helped shift the injured.

The tragedy occurred shortly before Railway Minister Piyush Goyal reached Mumbai on Friday to launch scores of new services for the Western Railway and Central Railway.

Mumbai Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar, who visited the scene, said it was the responsibility of the Western Railway authorities to ensure commuters’ safety.

Meanwhile, chief minister Devendar Fadnavis said that ” We spoke to chief secretary and commissioner of police. Have asked them to reach hospital to monitor and ensure that everyone gets all the help.”

Probe will be conducted by Maharashtra government and railways ministry and necessary, strict action will be taken, he added.

The festival-eve calamity sparked off angry reactions on social media, with many questioning lapses vis-a-vis safety and security of commuters even as projects like Bullet Trains are announced with fanfare.
