17th Kargil Vijay Diwas: Nation pays tribute to martyrs

Seventeen years ago, today Kargil Vijay Diwas – our armed forces won us a gritty yet decisive war against Pakistan in 1999.

On this day nation remembers 527 brave soldiers and 7 civilian porters who laid down their lives for the success of ‘Op Vijay’. This day also commemorates the sufferings, fortitude and compassion of their loved ones. For the widows, the wait of their husbands and for parents, shock of their sons, has never got over.

Today India pays homage to martyrs on 17th Kargil Vijay Diwas.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to micro-blogging site Twitter to glorify the sacrifices made by the soldiers.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Army, Navy and Air Force chiefs also paid homage in a memorial service at Amar Jawan Jyoti in the National Capital to commemorate the sacrifice made by our jawans.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh also paid his tribute to the martyrs.

Army Chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag paid homage to martyrs of Operation Vijay at the War memorial in Drass on Monday.

“General Dalbir Singh, Chief of the Army Staff, paid homage to the martyrs of ‘Operation Vijay’ at the historic Kargil War Memorial at Drass in Kargil district (of Jammu and Kashmir) today (Monday),” a defence statement said.

Accompanied by Lt Gen DS Hooda, Army Commander, Northern Command, and GOC Fire and Fury Corps, Singh also interacted with the widows and relatives of martyrs and other awardees during the event.

So on this Kargil Vijay Diwas, let us remember the thousands of families that have lost their loved ones – father, sons, husbands and brothers – because of their belief in serving the country and their commitment to protect us.
