16 killed in Ghana waterfall accident

Accra, March 20 At least 16 people died on Sunday after a huge tree fell on tourists and revelers at a waterfall at Kintampo in Brong Ahafo Region, police said.

Several others who have been injured in the accident are receiving treatment at the regional hospital, Kintampo divisional police commander Desmond Boampong has confirmed to Xinhua.

There are currently different versions of casualties. Another police officer Desmond Oppong Boanu told Xinhua the death toll was 18.

The victims, who are mostly senior high school students, were on an excursion and swimming beneath the fall when a rainstorm accompanied by a strong wind and thunder forced the tree to fall over them.

Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service and the police service are currently at the scene to rescue those trapped under the fallen tree.

The Kintampo waterfall is one of the highest waterfalls in Ghana.

New Delhi, April 23: At least seven people were injured on Monday after a guarder, which was being used by the Delhi Metro for the construction of a foot-over bridge, collapsed in Ghaziabad’s Mohan Nagar.

According to a statement issued by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC): The accident took place at an under-constructed foot-over-bridge at the Mohan Nagar metro station on the Dilshad Garden-New Bus Adda corridor.

The girder that fell was erected to build the foot-over-bridge in Mohan Nagar.

The DMRC in its statement also said that they are verifying the details of the incident.

Meanwhile, The Chief Project Manager and General Manager/Safety of DMRC have reached the site to take stock of the situation.

The bridge was being built for the upcoming Dilshad Garden-New Bus Adda section of the network.

The 9.41-km metro extension is proposed to have eight stations in Ghaziabad – Shaheed Nagar, Raj Bagh, Rajendra Nagar, Shyam Park, Mohan Nagar, Arthala, river Hindon and the New Bus stand.

Man sleeping on footpath run over by car in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, April 23: A man sleeping here on footpath has been crushed to death by a car driven by an engineering student, police said.

The incident occurred in Kushaiguda area when the 19-year-old returning after a late night party along with her three friends, lost control of the car. She was allegedly in an inebriated state, according to the police.

The car crossed the road divider and hit the footpath on the other side of the road.

K. Ashok (30), who used to work as a cobbler was sleeping on the footpath. He sustained critical injuries. He was rushed to the government-run Gandhi Hospital, where he succumbed.

The incident occurred after midnight in the DAE Colony here. The four students belong to a private engineering college.

People, who gathered at the spot, alleged that the police were trying to shield the students, as the girl who was driving the Skoda car is the daughter of a police officer.

Police said they have registered a case and conducting further investigations. The CCTV footage in the area was being scanned.

14-year-old girl kidnapped, gang-raped in Yamunanagar Haryana

CHANDIGARH: A 14-year-old girl belonging to a minority community was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped by four boys in a village in Yamunanagar district.

The incident occurred on April 17 when the girl was sleeping at her home and her parents had gone to Jathalana mandi for work.

The four accused barged into her house and took her to a dharamshala where they took turns to rape her.

Later, the accused dumped the girl outside her village in the morning.

The entire incident came to the light on Saturday evening, when girl’s parents informed the Jathlana police about her ordeal.

Girl’s mother said that all the accused are from the same village and they had threatened her daughter of dire consequences if she revealed the incident to anybody.

Inspector Sheelawanti of Women Police Station said that a case of POCSO Act, kidnapping and gang-rape has been registered against the accused.

“Soon after receiving the complaint, the girl was medically examined. She is confirmed to have been subjected to abuse. Rest we have rushed the police parties to check possible hideouts of the accused,” she said.

“Let our teams arrest the accused only then we shall be in the position to elaborate upon their role. Secondly, as far as place of occurrence is concerned, this was an old dharamshala building and had a small temple, This place was hardly used by villagers, hence accused apparently took her there,” she said.

Notably, the incident comes just two days after an 8-year-old tribal girl was allegedly raped by her uncle in a village falling under the Narnaund police station of Hisar.
