Ghatkopar building collapse: Death toll rises to 17; rescue operations continue


Mumbai, July 26: The death toll in two wings of a four-storey in Ghatkopar building collapse rose to seventeen.

11 people rescued safely and two of our jawans got injured due to the rescue, being medically treated, Divisional fire officer said on building collapse.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena leader Sunil Shitap booked for culpable homicide and detained by Mumbai police and being questioned after locals’ allegations that building collapsed due to renovation work being undertaken on ground floor nursing home owned by Shiv Sena’s Sunil Shitap.

BMC officials are yet to ascertain the reason behind the residential building collapse.

At least 14 fire engines, rescue vans and ambulances, besides teams of the state disaster management force, were reached to the site on  Tuesday soon after the incident, the BMC Disaster Control official said.

Around 12 families lived in the building which also housed a private hospital on the ground floor. The building figured on the BMC’s list of “dangerous buildings”.

Earlier on Tuesday, State Housing Minister Prakash Mehta, senior officials of the BMC and others rushed to the site to supervise rescue and relief operations.

However, BMC Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar on Tuesday said that Five people have died and eight seriously injured. He did not speak about Sunil Shitap and ordered an inquiry into the matter

The rescue operation is underway.
